Ever Wondered Who Jesus Is?
Growing up in a Christian family, the question of who Jesus is never seemed difficult to answer. My early response was simple: Jesus is the Son of God; He died for my sins and rose again. While true, this answer lacked depth—it had no scriptural basis and offered little insight into His divine nature. Such a simple answer would hardly satisfy a seeker or a non-believer.
Consider this: if someone asks, “Who is Mercy?” it is not enough to give an occupation or address. There is far more to Mercy than what she does or where she lives. In the same way, knowing who Jesus truly is enables us to develop a personal relationship with Him and to grow in confidence in our walk with God.
Even though His name is familiar to all, as believers, we must be ready to answer: Who do you say Jesus is?
Matthew 16:15–17 [NIV] records Jesus asking Peter, “But what about you? Who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus blessed Peter, explaining that this revelation came from God, not human insight.
My question for you today is the same: Whom do you say Jesus is?
Christians serve a Triune God: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Today, let’s explore who the Son of God truly is.
Keypoint 1: Jesus is the Son of God
Although Jesus walked this earth as a man, He is more than that. In John 8:58 [NIV], He declares, “Before Abraham was, I am.”
This is one of Jesus’s powerful statements proclaiming His divinity that He was before Abraham was born. Secondly, by using God’s own name, “I AM” (Exodus 3:14), Jesus claimed equality with God.
To affirm this, at Jesus’s baptism, Matthew 3:17 [NIV] records God’s voice from heaven: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Jesus is God’s Son, confirmed by the Father Himself.
Keypoint 2: Jesus is the Revelation of the Father
In John 14:8–9 [NIV], Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father. Jesus replies, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” Jesus explained to Philip that to know Jesus is to know God. The search for God ends in Jesus Christ.
Colossians 1:15 [NIV] further says, “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” Jesus is God made visible, the perfect expression of His glory in human form.
Keypoint 3: Jesus is the Agent of Creation
Hebrews 1:2–3 tells us that God spoke to us through His Son, through whom He made the universe. John 1:1–3 [NIV] reinforces this: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…through him all things were made.” In Hebrew, the Word is another expression for God. John’s description is speaking of Jesus. Jesus is not only part of creation; He is the one through whom all things exist.
Keypoint 4: Jesus is the Creator and Sustainer of All Things
Revelation 22:13[NIV] proclaims, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” John 1:14 [NIV] says, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, we have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only son… full of grace and truth.” Jesus sustains all creation, yet came to dwell among it, revealing His love and authority. The one and only is the emphasis of Jesus’ uniqueness. He is one of a kind with a relationship with the Father, unlike all believers who are called “children of God.”
Keypoint 5: Jesus is God
John 10:30 [NIV] records Jesus saying, “The Father and I are one.”
There is so much clarity in this statement. Jesus is not merely a prophet or teacher—He is fully God, one in the essence and nature of the Father. Therefore, following Jesus gives everlasting love and security.
Jesus’ Characteristics
- Omniscient – He knows all things
Psalm 147:5 [NIV] Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
His understanding has no limit.
- Omnipotent – He is all-powerful
Mark 10:27 [NIV] Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”
- Omnipresent – His presence fills the universe
Jeremiah 23:24 [NIV] Who can hide in secret places
So that I cannot see them?”
declares the Lord.
“Do not I fill heaven and earth?”
declares the Lord.
Jesus is infinite, holy, powerful, and supernatural. He is King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Light of the world, and the Returning King.
