The Foundation of a Lifelong Relationship

Before you marry someone, you take time to get to know that person before committing to a lifelong relationship. In a similar way, how well do you know the holy God who gave His life so that you could have a relationship with Him? What is the foundation of your trust in Him?

Come, let us discover who Jesus is. What is He like? What does the Bible reveal about His nature and character?

Whether you are someone who has never believed in Jesus or a Christian who has already accepted Him as Saviour, it is essential to keep growing in your knowledge of Him. As you know Him more deeply, your dependence on Him grows, your trust becomes stronger, and your life is filled with His joy and peace.

Today, character is rarely discussed. Society often measures success by wealth, status, or achievements. But have you ever measured your character against the character of the One who died to give you salvation and abundant life? It isn’t always easy, but it is worth the effort. At the end of this blog, I’ll explain why.

Let’s turn to the Scriptures.

Key Point 1: Jesus Abounds in Love

Psalm 86:15 [NIV]

“But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”

This verse beautifully reveals God’s heart. Scripture tells us that God is love. His compassion and grace are displayed even in the midst of our weaknesses. He patiently extends mercy to us again and again.

Key Point 2: Jesus Is Righteous

Psalm 89:14 [NIV]

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.”

God is a righteous and just King. His throne is established on righteousness, justice, love, and faithfulness. Everything He does is perfectly right.

As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect His character by turning away from wickedness, unfaithfulness, and injustice. These things grieve the Holy Spirit who lives within us.

Our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His character never changes, and neither does His love.

Let’s continue exploring His nature through Psalm 145.

Psalm 145 Reveals Who Jesus Is

Verse 3 – His greatness is beyond measure.

No one can do what Jesus can do. He is the Creator, the Alpha and the Omega.

Verse 4 – His works are mighty.

His power is displayed through everything He does.

Verse 5 – He is majestic and glorious.

He is not an earthly king limited by human weakness. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Verse 6 – He performs awesome deeds.

His works inspire wonder. Look at creation—the heavens, the oceans, the mountains, the flowers, and every living creature. They all display His breathtaking handiwork.

Verse 7 – He is righteous.

Everything He does is right and perfect.

Verses 8–9 – He is gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, rich in love, and good.

How often has God shown us grace? How patient has He been with us? We can be thankful that He is slow to anger and overflowing with mercy.

Verse 13 – He reigns forever.

His kingdom is everlasting. It is not limited by this world but is eternal. One day, His kingdom will be free from pain, sorrow, and tears.

Verses 15–16 – He provides for our needs.

He is our faithful Provider, giving us our daily bread and sustaining us every day.

Verse 17 – He is righteous and kind.

His kindness reaches far beyond what we deserve or can imagine.

Verse 18 – He is near to those who call on Him.

God desires a close relationship with us. Jesus not only died for our sins, but He also redeemed us with His precious blood because He wanted us to belong to Him.

When you purchase something, it becomes yours. In a far greater way, Jesus purchased us through His sacrifice. We belong to Him, and He delights in being near His children.

Verse 19 – He saves and rescues.

We all face difficulties in this fallen world, but we are never without a Rescuer.

Verse 20 – He protects His people.

The Lord watches over those who love Him and faithfully cares for them.

True worship flows from knowing who God truly is. The deeper we know His character, the more sincerely we worship Him.

Why Should We Pursue God’s Character?

At the beginning of this blog, I asked why it is worth pursuing these characteristics.

The answer is simple: it draws you closer to Jesus.

As your relationship with Him becomes more intimate, you begin sharing your heart with Him more freely. You discover that you can trust Him with your deepest fears, burdens, hopes, and dreams.

This relationship is not one-sided. As you draw near to Him, He reveals more of His heart to you through His Word, His Spirit, and His guidance. Your trust grows as you learn who He truly is.

Above all, remember this wonderful promise:

1 John 1:9 [NIV]

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

No matter how far you have drifted from God, if you sincerely confess your sins and repent, He is faithful to forgive and restore you.
