Holy Spirit: The Indwelling Person

Holy Spirit: The Indwelling Person

Who is the Holy Spirit?

When I had my first child, friends who came to visit would sometimes refer to the baby as “it” instead of “he.” As amusing as it sounds, my baby was never an “it.” He was a real person—a living being, wonderfully created in the image of God.

In a similar way, throughout my years in ministry, I have often heard people refer to the Holy Spirit as “it.” While this may seem harmless, it reveals a common misunderstanding. The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force, a feeling, or simply a power. He is a divine Person with intellect, will, emotions, and purpose.

In this blog, we’ll briefly explore who the Holy Spirit is and discover how He actively works in the lives of believers.

Key Point 1. The Holy Spirit Is the Third Person of the Trinity

As Christians, we worship one God who eternally exists in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They share the same divine essence and nature while carrying out distinct roles within God’s redemptive plan.

The Holy Spirit is eternal, just as the Father and the Son are eternal. He is fully God.

One of the clearest demonstrations of this is found in Acts 5:3–4. After Ananias secretly withheld part of the proceeds from the sale of his property, Peter confronted him, saying that he had lied to the Holy Spirit. Moments later, Peter declared that Ananias had not merely lied to human beings but to God.

This passage leaves no doubt: to lie to the Holy Spirit is to lie to God Himself. The Holy Spirit is not a lesser being or an impersonal influence—He is God.

Key Point 2. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth

Jesus introduced the Holy Spirit with these comforting words:

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.”
                                                                                                                      John 14:16–17 [NIV]

Jesus also refers to Him as the Spirit of Truth in John 15:26 and John 16:13, emphasizing His perfect reliability and faithfulness.

In a world where truth is often distorted or subjective, the Holy Spirit never deceives. He leads us into God’s truth, convicts us when we wander, and faithfully guides us along the narrow path that leads to life. We can trust Him completely because there is no falsehood in Him.

As we yield to His leading, He empowers us to become more like Jesus.

Key Point 3. The Holy Spirit is the Sevenfold Spirit of God

Throughout Scripture, the number seven symbolises completeness and perfection. In Genesis, God completed His work of creation in six days and rested on the seventh, marking the completion of His creative work.

When the Bible refers to the “seven Spirits of God,” it is not describing seven different spirits but the fullness and perfection of the one Holy Spirit.

Isaiah 11:2 [NKJV] beautifully describes this fullness:

“The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”

These seven descriptions reveal the completeness of the Holy Spirit’s character and ministry:

  • The Spirit of the Lord- The Spirit of Truth
  • The Spirit of wisdom
  • The Spirit of understanding
  • The Spirit of counsel
  • The Spirit of might
  • The Spirit of knowledge
  • The Spirit of the fear of the Lord

Every attribute we need to live a godly life is found in Him.

Key Point 4. The Holy Spirit is our Advocate

Jesus gave another beautiful title to the Holy Spirit:

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
                                                                                                                                  John 14:26 [NIV]

Jesus knew we could not navigate life alone. We need divine help, and that is exactly what the Holy Spirit provides.

The word Advocate (or Helper, Counsellor, depending on the translation) carries the idea of one who comes alongside to help, encourage, defend, and guide. Like a skilled legal advocate, the Holy Spirit speaks on our behalf, directs us according to God’s Word, and reminds us of Jesus’ teachings when we need wisdom.

His guidance protects us from the enemy’s traps and leads us to righteous decisions. He doesn’t simply offer good advice—He counsels us with perfect wisdom because He knows the heart and mind of God.

Final Thoughts

These are just a few of the many titles that reveal the beauty and ministry of the Holy Spirit. The more we know Him, the more confidently we can walk with God.

We were never meant to live the Christian life in our own strength. God has given us His Spirit to teach us, guide us, comfort us, empower us, and transform us into the likeness of Christ.

The Holy Spirit is not distant. He is not an “it.” He is God with us—our ever-present Helper, Advocate, Teacher, and Guide.

As we learn to recognise His voice and surrender to His leading, we discover that we never have to face life alone. We can live each day in the power, wisdom, and presence of the Holy Spirit.
